The National Anti-Corruption Alliance (NACA) has commended President Lazarus Chakwera for expressing commitment in establishing the Financial Crimes Division.
In his State of the Nation Address on Friday, the Malawi Leader said the new divisions will be responsible for, among others things, fast-tracking the disposal of corruption cases.
“Consultations are underway to soon establish the Probate and Family Division, as well as the Financial Crimes Division to fast-track the disposal of corruption cases.”
“This necessitates increasing the number of Judges of the High Court to support the new divisions, clear a backlog of cases, and ensure a fair distribution of work across the justice system,” said Chakwera.
Speaking to YONECO, the Alliance Chairperson Moses Mkandawire said the development is commendable bearing in mind corruption cases have flooded the country`s courts.
“We welcome the commitment but also the speech that has been made by the Head of State because it organs well with what we have been fighting all along.”
“We really need a special structure that should speed up crimes related to corruption in this country so this quite encouraging for us and also the country,” said Mkandawire.
Few weeks ago, NACA recommended the establishment of the financial crimes division considering the backlog of financial crimes in the country’s courts which are talking long to be concluded.
Mkandawire says NACA will sit down as an Alliance together with its stakeholders to see what input they can put forth to the establishment of the Financial Crimes Division.
