President Lazarus Chakwera has assured the Peoples Land Organisation (PLO) that his administration will resolve land wrangles in Thyolo and Mulanje Districts.
The assurance follows a meeting which the Organization’s leader Vincent Wandale had with President Chakwera in Lilongwe.
Speaking to YONECO, Wandale said he has thoroughly discussed with the Malawi Leader and that he will respond to the Organisation.
“What the President said is that he has heard everything and he going to address the PLO as a group so that his [Chakwera] responses should be directed towards the group not as an individual because I was just explaining there on behalf of the group,” said the PLO Leader.
Wandale added that Chakwera has pledged to go through the Presidential Commission of Enquiry on Land Policy Reform which prompted the land issue in the two districts.
“The President was so keen to understand the problem better and he wanted to go into details of the Malawi Presidential Commission of Enquiry on Land Policy Reform the report which was produced in 1999 by former President Bakili Muluzi and it explains our basis of argument as PLO,” said Wandale.
According to the Presidential report, the colonial estates of Thyolo and Mulanje were obtained by fraud by the whites.
Meanwhile, Chakwera has pledged to have an interface meeting with the PLO members on the matter.
