The National Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (NASME) has backed the sentiments by State President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera that the fishing industry plays a crucial role in the country’s revenue generation.
In his Weekly Brief on Monday, at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe, which focused on the environment, Chakwera said the industry has the capacity to generate income for the nation.
In his remarks, NASME Chairperson, William Mwale, said the industry is very crucial and does not require a huge investment in capital.
Mwale said: “Fish industry is very important to our country’s economy, and it has sustained us for quite a long time now and it’s a get rich type of business.”
However, Mwale has advised government to utilize various research that have been conducted in the fish industry as one way of boosting the sector.
“Most of the universities in the country, especially LUANAR, have been conducting research for some time now and time has come to utilize them,” he pleaded.
In his address Chakwera tackled issues to do with environment where he also talked about the potential of fishing industry both at business level and human health.
