Two members of the same family have died in Zomba district after being hit by a cruising motor vehicle.
Eastern Region police assistant public relations officer Tionge Kayenda said the accident occurred during the evening hours of Monday 2nd November at Six Miles along Zomba-Blantyre road, and has identified the two as Esnart and Chifuniro Chikwere.
On the fateful day Justine Matola, 25, was driving a motor vehicle registration number BLK 8957 Nissan Vannette Station Wagon from the direction of Zomba heading to Blantyre.
Kayenda said the driver failed to control the vehicle due to over speeding.
“On arrival at the stated place, Matola lost control of the vehicle due to speeding and swerved to the far offside of the road where he hit two female pedestrians who were walking towards the same direction,” she said.
Following the impact, Esnart died on spot while Chifuniro died while receiving treatment at Zomba Central Hospital due to multiple fractures and internal bleeding.
Kayenda said the driver sustained minor injuries and is admitted to Zomba Central Hospital once discharged he will answer the charge of causing death.
“Upon discharge from the hospital, the driver will answer the charge of causing death due to reckless driving,” Kayenda said.
Meanwhile Kayenda has advised all road users to comply with road traffic rules and regulations as one way of avoiding road accidents.
