Minister of Homeland Security Richard Chimwendo Banda has come under fire for inciting mob justice on rape and defilement perpetrators.
In a video clip which has gone viral on social media platforms, Chimwendo is seen urging the citizenry to beat up all rape and defilement suspects without mercy.
But speaking to one of child rights activists, Jennifer Ngwira said instead the minister should be ensuring the process of amending the country’s laws to stiffen punishment given to offenders of sexual abuse.
Ngwira said much as every person is disappointed with the spate of defilement cases in the country the minister’s move may not necessarily address the problem.
On his part, security expert Eugene Njoloma said Banda’s remarks will compromise the country’s criminal system as it has the potential of fueling human rights violation in the country.
Njoloma said: “It is disappointing that the call is coming from the Minister responsible for country’s security”.
Meanwhile, Mangochi senior resident magistrate- Joshua Nkhono has convicted and sentenced a 30-year-old King Mussah to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling his 15-year-old sister in-law.
