The Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services says the rate at which road accidents are happening is appalling and all road users must be cautious.
Speaking to Yoneco FM online on the sidelines of the annual general meeting for the Eastern Region Driving school association, Grecian Kondwani Msuku, Principal Road Traffic Officer for Zomba said driving schools have a critical role to play in controlling road accidents.
According to Msuku, between 2018 and 2019, road accidents in Malawi have increased by 91%.
“Presently every road accident is being captured whether it is fatal or minor and this is also one of the reasons why the figures are looking high.”
In his remarks, chairman for the Eastern Region Driving School Association Gracious Kubwalo said the meeting was important and it addressed an important topic and they will ensure that the learner drivers finish their syllabus in order to curb road accidents.
“We thought it wise to discuss the issue of road accidents as stakeholders of Malawi government we recognize the big role that we have to play in minimizing road accidents,” said Kubwalo.
The meeting brought together directors of driving schools instructors, police and officials from the directorate of road traffic and safety services.
The meetings theme centered on “The role of a driver to control road accidents in Malawi”.
