The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), says all is set for the by-election polls slated for Tuesday, December 15, 2020.
The by-elections will take place in Mangochi West, Mangochi North East and Phalombe North.
According to MEC’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Sangwani Mwafulirwa, all the materials required during the voting exercise have been delivered to the centres and pre-inspection exercise has been successful.
Mwafulirwa said: “We are set that by 6am on Tuesday all the centres in three constituencies should open for polling exercise.”
He therefore appealed to all those who registered to go and vote in their respective centres saying despite the exercise coinciding with the farming season which might keep the registered voters busy with field work, but it is important for them to exercise their right to vote.
He further highlighted that all COVID-19 preventive measures will be strictly followed in all the centres.
“Regarding COVID-19 preventive measures, at each polling station the commission has placed a bucket of water and soap to be used for washing hands and we are encouraging people to bring their own ballpoint pens for marking the ballot papers,” he said.
Phalombe North constituency has 28, 670 registered voters, with five candidates competing.
Mangochi North East has 31, 501 registered voters while Mangochi West has 27, 190 registered voters with three and five candidate on the ballot respectively.
