UN Malawi has called on government to address the root causes of ritual killings of people with albinism in the country.
In a statement issued on Wednesday signed by UN Resident Coordinator Jose Maria Torres, the organisation condemned the recent murder of a 26-year-old man with albinism, Saidi Dyton in Mangochi.
“Despite years of fighting for the rights and safety of persons with albinism, this murder shows there is much more work to be done,” the statement said.
The organisation has since urged government to provide adequate resources for fully implementation of the National Action Plan on Persons with Albinism.
The statement also called for effective and timely justice systems to hold perpetrators of violence against people with albinism accountable.
