Police in Zomba have arrested two fellow officers for allegedly killing three fishermen and injuring another two during a fracas at Lake Chilwa’s Lingani fishing dock on Saturday.
In a statement, National Police Spokesperson Superintendent James Kadadzera said the two will be charged with murder if investigations prove that they used excessive force.
Kadadzera, however, called on the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and the Independent Police Complaints Commission to jointly investigate the matter to ensure credible findings.
The fracas erupted when the patrol team from Kachulu Police Unit was trying to confiscate fishing gear from fishermen who were defying a fishing ban on Lake Chilwa.
