Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has vowed to continue with the strike until government comes out clearly on the issue of Covid-19 risk allowances.
TUM said this during an hour long meeting with officials from the Ministry of Education at Bingu International Conference Centre (BICC) in Lilongwe on Monday in an effort to resolve the standoff that saw teachers absconding classes when schools opened yesterday.
This comes despite ministry of education’s commitment to address some of the body’s grievances like provision of protective gear and recruitment and deployment of teachers.
Speaking to YFM, Principal Secretary responsible for administration in the ministry Kiswell Damau has pushed issue of risk allowance issue to the Presidential Taskforce on Covid-19.
On Monday, students were sent back while in some districts there were fracas over the issue.
