The Chief Resident Magistrate’s Court in Lilongwe has released on bail 12 presiding officers who presided over the 2019 elections in Lilongwe City.
The accused persons, who appeared before Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Chirwa, are being accused of falsifying documents relating to elections by using Tippex.
The Court has since asked all the 12 accused persons to pay a cash bond of K50,000 each and report to National Police Headquarters once every fortnight, among other conditions.
“The State has since asked for three week to serve the defense with the disclosures and that it is ready with 16 witnesses in the case.
We haven’t seen any evidence, we are waiting for the State to serve us the evidence then that will determine how we proceed,” said Powell Nkhutabasa is lawyer representing the accused persons.
The defendants spent 2 days in police custody having being arrested on Sunday.
Their arrest followed a directive by the office of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) that the police prosecute all individuals who messed up the 2019 elections.
