Speaker of the National Assembly Catherine Gotan Hara has tested positive for coronavirus, Leader of the House, Richard Chimwendo Banda has confirmed.
According Chimwendo Banda, the Speaker went to the hospital on Thursday morning after two members in her household tested positive for the coronavirus.
“Yes I can confirm, she went on her own to the hospital this morning, it happened that two members of the her workers house tested positive and she deliberations wanted to take the test herself so she went,” said Chimwendo Banda.
On Monday, Gotani Hara chaired the parliamentary Mid-Year Budget Review meeting which is currently underway in Lilongwe.
Chimwendo Banda however said that Gotani Hara is currently doing well hence she has not been admitted to the hospital.
“She is okay, she is doing well, she is not sick but she did that as somebody who is thinking more about any other person, we pray for her and together with her family, we wish her well,” said Chimwendo Banda.
He however said that the absence of the Speaker will not affect parliamentary proceedings.
“There is nothing else this can disturb the parliamentary proceedings, we have both deputy speakers available to take care of Parliament,” he said.
