The Chief Resident Magistrate`s Court in Lilongwe has completed hearing evidence from 4 witnesses in a case in which Stuart Kalungama is being accused to have being defiling his 9 year-old stepdaughter.
The four witnesses, which includes the survivor herself testified before Chief Resident Magistrate Patrick Chirwa on Friday.
After hearing evidence from both parties, Magistrate Chirwa has given both sides 14 days to submit final submissions before the Court determines whether the accused has a case to answer or not.
“The State informed the Court when the matter was beginning that we had four witnesses, which we had intended to call and I can confirm that we managed to call them all.
“The first witness the mother, the survivor herself, the medical personnel as well as the one who investigated, in short, we opened our case and we have closed the prosecution’s case,” said Eunice Ndingo, one of the lawyers representing the State.
Ndingo has expressed optimism that the case will not take long before it is concluded.
“In short I am satisfied with the processes that have happened so far and I hope that it will not take forever before the case comes to an end,” said Ndingo.
Meanwhile, Kalungama who was arrested more than 3 weeks ago, is still on remand at Maula Prison.
