The Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) says it faces problems when adding value to cotton due to low production.
Speaking to YONECO FM online, ADMARC spokesperson Agnes Ndovi said their machines are big and designed to process cotton which is not less than 75,000 metric tons.
“We have three huge ginneries nationwide and most of the times we do not use the machines to their fullest capacity because the production volumes are low,” she said.
Commenting on the matter, Executive Director for Africa Institute for Corporate Citizenship(AICC) Felix Lombe said it is critical to address the supply constraints on cotton and also stimulate demand which will cause the prices of cotton to go up thereby increasing production.
Lombe said ginning is not the only value addition that can be done on cotton citing that crushing of cotton seeds is also a viable option.
“We would want to welcome as many players as possible on ground who should be in a position to do that,” he said.
