As the police are still making more arrests in connection with the plunder of K6.2 billion Covid-19 public funds, the Malawi Law Society (MLS) has tipped government to empower the judiciary department with adequate resources to ensure that the cases are expedited.
Currently 46 suspects are already in police custody and according to the police more arrests are expected to be made.
MLS President, Patrick Mpaka, said the court proceedings on the cases involving Covid-19 funds are likely to attract more interest from the public hence the need to speed up the trials.
Mpaka said: “What is needed is a power building capacity by getting the criminal division of the high court empowered and increasing a number of magistrates and judges so that the judicially is able to handle the growing numbers of suspects.”
He further advised the police to always have sufficient information before effecting an arrest to avoid further delays.
“By the time the police effect an arrest they must have sufficient information so that there are no further delays while the suspects are in their custody,” said Mpaka.
He said if the police go for investigation while the suspect has already been arrested it tells that he should have not been arrested in the first place.
Top government officials have been arrested and Labour Minister Ken Kandodo has been sucked over misuse of Covid-19 funds.
