Former Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC) Director General Aubrey Sumbuleta has today failed to get bail, a week after his lawyers filed an application for bail before Judge Chifundo Kachale.
On Monday, the Judge was expected to rule on the application but failed due to a public holiday that was on Monday this week.
Meanwhile, High Court Registrar Madalitso Chimwaza has directed the defence to file notice of a day to deliver ruling on bail application for the accused.
In an interview, one of the lawyers representing Sumbuleta; Oscar Taulo said the Defense will file the notice and that they will be waiting for the Court to set a date for the delivery of the ruling.
“We had to enquire the direction from the Registrar, and the Registrar has advised that we should file notice delivery of ruling so that they can fix the date when the ruling can be delivered.
“The notice is for the delivery of the ruling of bail application so it is for that notice when the court will set a day when a ruling will be delivered,” said Taulo.
The accused was arrested last month by police in Blantyre in connection to findings by a Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) investigation report into the alleged sexual harassment of female employees at MBC.
Among other recommendations, the MHRC report recommended that the public broadcaster should compensate four survivors while they consider pursuing the matter in court.
Sumbuleta, who is currently on remand at Maula Prison in Lilongwe, is answering six counts which include indecent assault and abuse of office.
