Government on Wednesday destroyed 19,610 doses of expired Covid-19 vaccines.
Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda said the incineration has been done to ensure that the expired vaccines are not used in hospitals and to assure the public of safety.
However, the government went on with the move despite earlier calls by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Africa Centre for Disease Control not to destroy the expired COVID-19 vaccine doses.
The WHO and Africa CDC in March said expired COVID-19 vaccines are still safe to use.
Malawi received three batches of the Covid-19 vaccines from Covax facility, government of India and African Union (AU).
