Leader of Opposition in Parliament Kondwani Nankhumwa has proposed for review of Standing Order 70 specifically on questions directed to the President.
The call follows the second appearance of President Lazarus Chakwera in Parliament today who responded to questions from the lawmakers pertaining to his State of the Nation Address (SONA) delivered two weeks ago.
According to Nankhumwa, much as the Malawi Leader is fulfilling his constitutional mandate of appearing before the House and respond to questions from lawmakers, more needs to be done on how the process is carried out.
“I think we need to revisit the Standing Order [70] that invites the President to the House because I can describe it as a mixed reaction,” said Nankhumwa.
The Opposition Leader added that as it stands, President Chakwera has the liberty to tackle particular questions and the leave some, which he says is not to the best interest of Malawians.
“Because in as far as this Standing Order is concerned, the President normally chooses what to answer or what not answer.
There were a lot of issues that were addressed in the House by the honourable members but the President just choose where he thought he can give responses,” argued the opposition leader.
Nankhumwa has since described President Chakwera`s response to questions as a mixed bag.
“The coming of the President to Parliament is a new phenomenon in Malawi, we will keep on learning on how it is done on where we should be improving, but the underlying part is that we need to revisit the Standing Orders,” maintained Nankhumwa.
