The 74th World Health Assembly has committed to strengthen health systems and multi-sectoral approaches than can assist in the prevention and response to violence against children.
According to the assembly, violence against children undermines investments in health and education and wears down the productive capacity of future generations.
The new resolution lists a range of actions to be taken by governments and the WHO Secretariat, in collaboration with other stakeholders, to ensure the health and well-being of children.
Every year, about 1 billion children are affected by physical, sexual or psychological violence, suffering injuries, disabilities and death as well as the negative impact of witnessing violence between parents or caregivers.
COVID-19-related stay-at-home measures have also highlighted children’s vulnerability to violence within family settings.
The 74th World Health Assembly which commenced on 24 May and is expected to end on 1 June 2021 is being held under the theme “Ending this pandemic, preventing the next: building together a healthier, safer and fairer world”.
