The Mzuzu Senior Resident Magistrate Court has acquitted former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Northern Region governor Christopher Mzomera Ngwira and three others in a case in which they were being accused of inciting violence.
Ngwira and others were accused of inciting a fracas at a rally by Malawi Congress Party (MCP) President Lazarus Chakwera at Chiwabvi Primary School in 2016.
Passing judgement Senior Resident Magistrate Peter Kandulu made the acquittal on grounds that the state failed to provide substantial evidence incriminating the four.
Commenting on the ruling, Ngwira’s lawyer, Christone Ghambi said he was happy that the court agreed with their defence.
“We are happy to see that the court ruled in our favour and that we put together a strong defence,” said Ghambi.
Out of the seven accused, four have been acquitted but the remaining three still have a case to answer before the court of law.
