The Malawi Electoral commission (MEC) says it will not extend voter registration and verification exercise for the June 29 by-elections.
Spokesperson for MEC Sangwani Mwafulirwa said MEC believes that people in all areas where the by-elections are taking place had enough time to do the exercise which will officially close on June 8.
“We are reminding all registered voters and would be registered voters in the two wards and also Nkhata Bay central constituency that voter registration and verifications exercise will end on Tuesday,” he said.
Mwafulirwa further said that by election activities have not been suspended in view of the High Court judgment which quashed the appointment of the four MEC Commissioners.
“The commission is further advising stakeholders that activities and preparations for the by elections have not be cancelled and that aspirants who have not collected nomination papers are encouraged to do so and bring them for pre-inspection on 11th June,” he said.
“The candidates should continue with the campaigns.”
