President Lazarus Chakwera has singled out the Coronavirus pandemic as one of the contributing factors that has constrained his government from fulfilling some of the promises during the first year of his presidency.
The remarks come as the Tonse-led administration clocks one year ever since ushered into power.
Chakwera, who was speaking through his Press Secretary Brian Banda in Mangochi at Chikoko Bay State Lodge, said the Malawi leader is committed to fulfilling the campaign pledges throughout his term not in a period of one year.
Banda has cited the one-million jobs promise that the Tonse administration is striving to achieve.
He added that the global economy has slowed down because of the pandemic which has in turn also affected the country`s state of affairs.
“There have been substantial number of jobs that have been created and jobs are being created every day and some of the developments that will commence soon will also create further numbers of jobs in this country.
I also must hasten to say that because of how the economy has slowed down because of Covid-19, this has also affected in terms of job creation in the country,” said Banda.
In his inaugural speech last year, the Malawi leader, among other promises, pledged that he will be going to Parliament to be questioned by the People about his handling of state affairs, propose legislation to reduce the powers of the presidency and empower institutions to operate independently.
Chakwera is, next week, expected to address the nation in accordance with how his administration has performed in the first year.
