Monday June 21, 2021 marks the longest night and shortest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere and in Malawi.
According to the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, the phenomenon means that from today, the subsequent days will start getting longer.
Speaking to Yoneco FM, the Department`s Director Jolamu Nkhokwe said tomorrow, which is Tuesday June 22, 2021 will mark the second longest night and shortest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere and in the country.
“As the position of the sun will be at its farthest point in the Northern Hemisphere, lowest in the northern horizon further away from the country and therefore will receive lowest amount of heat from the sun.
“However, from this day, the days will start getting longer. That means June 22 will mark the second largest night and shortest day of the year in Southern Hemisphere and in Malawi,” said Nkhokwe.
Meanwhile, most parts of the country will are expected to continue experiencing chilly weather conditions and occasional outbreaks of rain drizzles and showers particularly over the highlands, locally known as Chiperoni.
According to Nkhokwe, this is due to an influx of cool and moist airflow from the south east induced by a high-pressure area in the Indian ocean.
