Authorities have disclosed that they intend to distribute over nine million mosquito nets across the country towards achieving the Zero Malaria Campaign.
Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo told Yoneco FM Online that apart from the mass mosquitoes net distribution exercise, government will also conduct indoor residual spray.
“My ministry is aware that malaria still remains one of the number one killers of people in Malawi especially children under five but also pregnant mothers.
“So, this campaign involves giving out over nine million mosquito nets across the country but we are also doing indoor residual spray where we will be killing the vectors,” she said.
Kandodo added that plans are currently underway to reach out to at least 10 districts across the country that are frequently affected by the disease.
“It started like a pilot project and we rolled out in four districts especially where we had the most cases of malaria and people were dying from malaria like Nkhata Bay, Nkhotakota and Mangochi.
“So, we are targeting those districts where it is a huge problem of malaria and indeed of mosquitoes but eventually, we will roll out all the districts in Malawi,” the minister said.
Last week on Tuesday President Lazarus Chakwera announced a goal to eliminate malaria, a leading cause of death in the country, by 2030.
The mosquito-spread parasitic disease accounts for almost 15% of the country`s hospital admissions, especially in rural settings largely affecting under-five children and pregnant women.
