Catholic University (CU) based economic analyst Edward Masoambeta has commended Parliament for passing of a bill which seeks to establish a Tax Appeals Tribunal.
Speaking to YFM on the development, Masoambeta said the development will allow the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) to be directly focused on its immediate duties.
Masoambeta said: “This is a welcome move to have a Tax Appeals Tribunal because we are following in the steps of our neighboring countries such as Tanzania and Kenya which brings more benefits than downsides.”
Masoambeta further said some of the positives that the country can look forward to are a reduction of tax evasion cases and enhanced transparency in the tax system.
“This Tribunal will help to reduce instances of evasion of Tax it may also help to bring fairness and transparency in the tax system,” he said.
Masoambeta also stated that the move has the potential to reinstate confidence in the citizenry that it will be able to attain justice on any tax related matters which require the law since it will be dealing with an independent body.
