National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) has expressed strong opposition to the amended Labour Relations Bill which among others, seeks to empower an employer to deduct wages of an employee who is on strike.
A statement signed by NONM first vice president Hanna Chisenga Mtemang’ombe says such amendment restraints employees from participating in any strike.
“With the financial standing of the majority of the employees in Malawi, most of them would not risk not being paid due to participation in a strike,” the statement reads.
The organisation has therefore called on Members of Parliament and President Lazarus Chakwera to reject such drastic and ‘far reaching effects’ ammendment.
