President Lazarus Chakwera has vowed to send back to Parliament the recently passed Labour Relations Amendment Bill once it reaches his table.
He relayed the pledge Wednesday after having an audience with the leadership of the Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) which is expressing dismay over the passing of the Bill.
Meanwhile, MCTU has called off protests it intended to hold in the country`s major cities aiming at asking President Chakwera not to assent to the Bill.
“We have suspended the demonstrations just because this afternoon we were called by the Head of State where we presented our grievances in form of a petition.
“The President has assured us that the Bill has not reached him, but in an event that it reaches him any day from today, the Bill will be send back for consultations,” said MCTU President Charles Kumchenga.
However, Kumchenga cautioned that if the Malawi leader acts contrary to his pledge, the Congress will not hesitate but opting for the protests.
“That’s why we are using the word suspension of the demonstrations obviously, the demonstrations will be resurfaced and we believe that the President cannot do that.
“But in an in event that the President has done that, MCTU will make a decision out of that,” he said.
MCTU has also dismissed reports that the Congress pockets over K700 million from its members nationwide as alleged by government.
