One of the presidential aspirants in the upcoming Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) elections, Khungekile Matiya, has withdrawn from the race.
Matiya announced her withdrawal through a press statement which YFM Online has seen. This now leaves the presidential race to two contestants namely, Abigail Sharrif and Emie Waya Chongwe. The elections have been slated for 7 August 2021.
In her statement, Matiya could not devulge more information of her decision not to contest in the elections.
“I had expressed interest to contest for the presidency, and indeed I was nominated for the same. However, I have reconsidered my position and have decided not to contest in the uppcoming executive elections scheduled for 7 August 2021,” she said.
Matiya, therefore, wished all the contestants the best of luck and extended an olive branch to being available to asssist the new executive committee in the transition where necessary.
However, some sports commentators have welcomed the decision by Khungekile Matiya. Lilongwe-based sports journalist Frankie Kalilombe said what she has done is being democratic.
“It is better to leave the stage when the audience is still clapping. She could have opted to stay in the race up to the bitter end. Let’s wish her well for voluntarily quitting office,” he said.
