Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) has expressed disappointment over the leadership of Tonse Alliance for failure to deliver its campaign promises to Malawians.
A press statement, signed by CCJP National Coordinator, Boniface Chibwana, said Tonse government has lost direction in terms of political promises made during campaign and the hope of many Malawians, especially the youth, is fading.
Reads part of the statement: “It is deplorable and disturbing that tendencies of nepotism in public continue to thrive despite detestation from many quarters within the society. This iniquity only worsens social inequalities while debilitating merit and the equalization of opportunities for inclusive development.”
The statement further said corruption in government procurement processes continues to worsen as politically connected officials are reported to be benefiting from such corrupt practices.
“While CCJP applauds and welcomes the new leadership at the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), we observe that continued politicisation of public procurement and political interference in public service provision bodies will render the ACB ineffective,” reads the statement.
The Tonse government has also been accused of losing touch with the collective agenda to elevate the socio-economic welfare of Malawians and to improve the quality of governance which many people embraced but instead there are wrangles among alliance partners.
However, CCJP has applauded government for an improved and organised management of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“It is our hope that strides in health information, testing, vaccination and caring for patients will be sustained and enhanced,” said the statement.
