President Lazarus Chakwera has vowed to go against anyone behind what he calls unreasonable hike of fertilizer prices.
Speaking through a televised address, Chakwera said he believes the motive to hike fertilizer to above MK30, 000 is to choke the success of Affordable Inputs Programme (AIP).
The President has also said he will not allow names of AIP beneficiaries to be trimmed.
President Chakwera`s response over the fertiliser issue comes barely weeks as various stakeholders have expressed concern over what they have described as exorbitant prices.
According to the Malawi leader, AIP has positively impacted the country in as far as issues to do with food security are concerned.
The President says he believes the unreasonable rise in fertiliser is plot my some misguided quarters to tarnish the progress of the programme.
On this, Chakwera has assured farmers in the country that his administration will do everything possible to ensure that farmers purchase fertiliser at a lower price.
The Malawi leader said that in realization that farming is the country’s economic backbone, his administration will continue to defend farmers.
He added that he will soon be addressing the nation on his government`s next plan over the matter.
Chakwera also assured farmers that he will not allow the AIP beneficiary list to be trimmed contradicting what agriculture authorities’ announcement that beneficiaries will be reduced by 1 million households.
