Nkhata Bay Central Member of Parliament Symon Vuwa Kaunda says he has instructed his lawyers to drag the Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) to court over its failure to compensate him K600 million.
Speaking to Yoneco FM, Vuwa Kaunda said he suffered both moral and financial loss because the electoral body failed to properly manage the election.
The Nkhata Bay Central lawmaker added that MEC failed to abide by its mandate of ensuring that original tally sheets were produced.
“The onus was on MEC to produce the original document in that regard to confirm whether or not which side of the figure to believe so the court demanded the original tally sheet, MEC did not produce that,” said Vuwa Kaunda.
“So, that is the basis of our claim, the election was nullified because MEC did comply with its constitutional obligation, MEC was duty-bound to produce the original documents.”
But when contacted for a comment, MEC’s Director of Media and Public Relations Sangwani Mwafulirwa said it is premature for the Commission to comment as it is yet to be served with court documents.
“It’s premature for MEC to comment since this is just an intention. When the court documents are filed and served on MEC, we will respond accordingly and appropriately,” said Mwafulirwa in a WhatsApp response.
