Malawi Electoral Commission (Mec) says it will look at intensive strategies of getting voters to understand the roles of councillors in their communities.
Speaking on day 2 of voter registration and update exercise when he monitored some centres in Balaka, MEC chairperson Justice Chifundo Kachale said there is still a gap in understanding the roles of councillors, but it is important to hold the position of councillor with high regard.
“We have been trying to emphasize on the importance of councillors to the development agenda of an area and mobilizing political parties to embrace by elections just as they do with the constituency election,” he said.
Kachale also stressed on MEC’s cautiousness in controlling the spread of Covid-19 during this exercise.
“We are providing face masks to people ,ensuring that sanitisers and hand washing facilities are available and that physical distance is observed at all polling centres,” he said.
Over one billion kwacha will be used to administer the by election.
