The Professional Drivers Union has called off a national wide sit in following a lengthy roundtable discussion that the Union had for the past two days with government.
Briefing the media in Lilongwe, the Union`s Secretary General Mphatso Mollen said they have cancelled the strike upon being satisfied by government that their grievances will be addressed.
According to Mollen, all drivers should report back to work following an assurance from the joint ministerial committee.
Also present during the briefing was Transporter Association of Malawi Executive Member Byson Mipando who has expressed satisfaction that authorities will address their grievances.
“We submitted to them our grievances that have been there that have been going on for several year now and we have agreed and satisfied with the conservation we have had.
“We have also given the joint ministerial committee a timeframe to give us a response but we have also formed a taskforce which is going to be ongoing to address issues that we have raised,” said Byson.
Homeland Security Minister Richard Chimwendo Banda said government delayed implementing some of the demands because they were supposed to through a legislation.
“I can confirm, we have had discussion since yesterday and today we also had a long-day discussion, we have come to a conclusion and you have yourself that they have called off the strike.
“We need to move together as a country, their issues are genuine, issues that have been addressed for some time, but most of them were waiting for legislation,” said Chimwendo Banda.
Recently, government announced that it has reduced passport fee that the international truck drivers are supposed to have and scrapping off the Covid-19 testing fee.
