The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has condemned the graft bursting body Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for continued persecution of former president Peter Mutharika.
DPP Spokesperson, Shadreck Namalomba, through a statement has described the freezing of Mutharika’s bank accounts and the intent to invade and search his private properties as unnecessary harassment which is causing him psychological torture.
Namalomba said ACB’s actions towards Mutharika does not entail what exactly he did wrong as such they consider it an abuse of power.
Said Namalomba: “The intention to invade and search his house, laptops and phones contradict with the laws of the country under section 21 (a) of the constitution, the intended search was supposed to be done on an individual who is charged with a crime and not the innocent Mutharika which is only causing him psychological torture.”
He has since suggested that ACB comes public and make it known what Mutharika is being charged with.
He has also said that the ACB should emulate from the Malawi Revenue Authority which was clear on what it wants from the former leader who cooperated accordingly and not duplicate MRA’s work.
Mutharika is entangled in the cement saga where his personal bodyguard is alleged to have used Mutharika’s Taxpayer Identification Number to import 1.2 million bags of cement.
