The Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Blantyre has convicted two women, Esnart Selemani, 53, and her daughter Yankho, 30, for assaulting a Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital nurse, Gertrude Moffat, 26.
Senior Resident Magistrate Akya Mwanyongo, found the two women guilty on offences of assault and bodily harm which they committed on February 17, 2021 when they assaulted the nurse who was on duty in Ward 5A after she asked them to leave the Ward due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Senior Resident Magistrate Mwanyongo has since revoked bail for the two convicts and set Friday as the date for mitigation and litigation submissions from both the defence and the state before passing his sentence.
In his reading, Senior Resident Magistrate Mwanyongo, said; “The court has proved beyond reasonable doubt that on the day of the incident the two accused persons reacted wildly despite the nurse being polite to them while she was performing her duty.”
He further described the nurse as a “model” saying her action was admirable unlike most nurses who usually act rudely to patients and guardians.
