An environmentalist says Malawi will lose a lot to land degradation if it does not put its house in order.
Speaking to YONECO FM online, Mathews Malata said as an agro-based economy Malawi must find solutions to the land degradation problem and this must happen quickly.
“If the problem persists Malawi will be left with less land to do agricultural activities and this will reduce productivity,” he said.
Malata made the comment following what the ministry of agriculture recent revelation that land degradation has reached alarming levels.
“Malawi needs some proper, practical up to date policies for land management so they can aid the process of rehabilitating the land,” he said.
Malata also called for coordinated efforts from ministries of agriculture, forestry and land to halt the problem.
