Activists are lobbying for an increase in budget allocation towards sexual and reproductive health services (SRHS).
A delegation from SRH Africa Trust (SAT) and the SRH Alliance has told the Health Committee of Parliament that failure by government to commit to the Abuja Declaration of allocating 15 percent of the total national budget to health sector is having negative effects on SRHS.
SAT- Malawi Country Director Robert Phiri said while the country is allocating about 11 percent to the health sector bellow the Abuja Commitment, SRHS is receiving very little.
Phiri said government should consider increasing funding if the country is to register gains in promotion of SRH, HIV and AIDS fight and reducing teen pregnancies.
Member of the Health Committee of Parliament, Owen Chomanika, said the committee will engage relevant ministries to look at the funding issue.
