National Registration Bureau (NRB) will in the next two weeks resume the mass registration exercise which was suspended some months ago after registration officers complained over the delay in payment of their allowances.
NRB commenced the exercise following the expiry of about 3 million national identity cads with others expected to expire before the end of the year.
However, the registration exercise was marred by delays to pay registration workers leading to its suspension.
Speaking in an interview with YONECO Online, NRB Director, Noel Chinkhuku, said the delays in payment was as a result of challenges in the government payment system called Integrated Financial Management Informational System (IFMIS).
“We are in the process of finalizing the logististics so that we may go back to the field to resume the exercise, the new preparations met the payment challenges attributed to the new IFMIS.
“We are expected to resume the registration in the next two weeks,” he said.
The national identity cards are supposed to be renewed after every 10 years, however after the first issue in 2016 some identity cards were given less life spans with others less than six years.
Mass Registration of national identity cards was introduced to ease congestion in the NRB offices especially for the replacement of national identity cards.
