Malawi has joined commemorations for the SADC Malaria week, beginning November 8, 2021.
A statement signed by secretary for health Dr Charles Mwansambo has indicated that during this week, the ministry will also launch the Mosquito nets mass distribution campaign.
The theme for this year’s commemoration is ‘Community Involvement is Key to Achieving Zero Malaria’.
The Ministry of Health’s statement has reminded the general public that malaria is still a major health problem in the country, with 6 million cases registered annually and about 2,400 malaria-related deaths occurring annually, according to the 2020 data from the Ministry.
Mindful of this threat, the Ministry of Health and partners continue to implement various interventions aimed at fighting Malaria across the country.
The statement also reminded the general public that President Lazarus Chakwera, recently launched the Zero Malaria Starts with Me! Campaign which calls for every individual to participate in ending malaria.
The ministry has advised the general public not to misuse the nets which they are going to receive, as they are meant to prevent Malaria.
Other strategies include Indoor Residual Spraying (IRS); Case Management; administration of Fansidar to pregnant women; and health education on Malaria prevention.
Malawi will commemorate SADC Malaria Week on 11 November.
