The Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) says it is optimistic that it will collect the targeted K1.3 trillion for the 2021-22 fiscal year.
The authority has so far managed to collect just over K319 billion in the first quarter of the fiscal year expected to end in March.
MRA Head of Corporate Affairs Steven Kapoloma said the authority is working tirelessly to meet the target.
“We acknowledge the contributions of tax payers in the country which is making us to really appreciate the effort and we are still looking forward to see more taxpayers to be able to bring much needed revenue which should be used to implement government’s different projects,” he said.
However, Kapoloma said the authority is also struggling in this exercise despite many efforts that have been instituted.
“There are issues of smuggling, underdevaluation, people declaring little profits on their various businesses are some of the challenges making the authority not to do well in its work hence asked the public intervention to help much on the matter,” he said.
“We are making sure that each and every illegible tax payer is registered to contribute to the development of the country.” said Kapoloma.
