The Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), says the stormy winds accompanied by heavy rainfall which has been experienced in the country since the rainy season began this year, has already affected 6, 047 households and 10 people have lost their lives.
DoDMA spokesperson, Chipiliro Khamula, said the department has already started distributing food and non-food items to the affected families.
Non-food items include kitchen utensils, temporary roofing’s among others.
He mentioned districts such as Mangochi, Lilongwe, Phalombe, Mulanje, Nkhatabay, Mchinji, Balaka and Chiradzulu as the ones affected.
Khamula said: “Sadly we have registered 10 deaths due to the stormy rains in the country and out of these deaths, seven occurred due to lightening whilst the three were killed by collapsed walls and 44 people were injured.”
According to Khamula 4, 020 households have already received relief items.
