Former UTM National Director of Youth, Bon Kalindo, on Friday, led a group of demonstrators from Blantyre and presented the petition to Blantyre City Council in protest of Tonse alliance led government.
The demonstrations started from Blantyre city business center to the council’s Civic Centre offices.
Among other grievances in the petition, include unfulfilled campaign promises by Tonse government such as job creation, a hike in water and cooking oil and toll gate fee.
In the petition Kalindo has further given government 14 days to address the issues or else they will come back to the streets for another round of protests.
Kalindo has also announced his resignation as board member for the Malawi Housing Corporation as one way of expressing his disapproval on the recent rental hike.
The demonstrations were scheduled to start at 8:30am but Kalindo was nowhere to be seen until people lost patience and went into riots.
The development led police to fired teargas at protesters who block the roads with burnt tires and torched a police unit which is situated near Blantyre flea market.
However, Kalindo joined the demonstrators in the afternoon and led them to Civic Centre offices where they delivered their petition.
In his response to the violence, Kalindo said: “Those people who went into violence were bandits sent by government.”
