Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda has called upon the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources to provide oversight to the Electricity Supply Cooperation of Malawi (Escom) amid reports delayed electricity connection.
The recommendation follows widespread concerns from most people complaining that it is taking years for Escom to connect electricity into their structures despite paying connection fee.
The House Leader, who was responding to questions from lawmakers directed to Ministry of Energy, said government is committed in ending corrupt practices at all levels including within the electricity supplier.
“This government is taking Escom to task to make sure that justice is done, the ones who come first must be served first, other than corruption being involved,” he said.
“And I did ask the Natural Resources Committee of Parliament to provide oversight to Escom now and again to make sure that this is been done, it is the role of Members of Parliament through their respective committees to provide oversight to government institutions.”
Meanwhile, Chimwemwe Banda has described third week of the deliberative assembly as fruitful to both government and the House in general including improved attendance.
“I think the week has ended up very well, we have seen in the week, apart from the Private Member`s Business for the first time we have seen a Bill about Financial Services Act being introduced in the House through a private member,” he said.
“Quite a very interesting week where they have been a healthy debate for members, another thing that as a leader I am happy with is the numbers, members have been coming and the numbers are increasing, I think this is very good four our people to be presented in such a manner.”
