Member of Parliament (MP) for Chitipa South Werani Chilenga has bemoaned poor road Infrastructure which he says it is negatively affecting progress of development in the District.
Chilenga singled out Nthalire where he said the road connecting the area becomes inaccessible especially during the rainy season.
“Most challenging problem for the people of Chitipa South is the road from Rumphi to Chitipa via Nyika, and also the road from Karonga via Nthalire to Kapilikhonde,” said Chilenga.
“Last year Nthalire was not accessible through these roads because the roads were completely damaged, now we were expecting the contractor to be on the ground, up to now the contractor is not on the ground.”
He added that as this year’s rain season approaches, there are fears that it will be difficult to access most of the areas in the district due to poor road condition.
“The road condition is worsening due to the fact that we are almost already in the rainy season, I hope that it will be extremely difficult for someone to travel from Rumphi, Karonga and Chitipa to Nthalire,” said Chilenga.
“This is very negative development and we urge government to do something as soon as possible.”
Earlier in May this year, government through the Minister of Finance Felix Mlusu told Parliament that government is expected to raise K1.0 trillion from the local market over a period of five years to finance the flagship projects including the Rumphi – Nthalire – Nyika – Chitipa road, to be upgraded to a paved road covering a distance of 260 kilometers
