Students from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) have accused the University’s administration of withholding semester examination results of about 335 students on grounds that they have failed to pay their school fees.
One of the student’s council members, who opted for anonymity, confided to YFM that the union has resolved to meet soon and map the way forward.
The students union was supposed to meet on Monday but failed because some of the members come from far places and furthermore they are on holiday.
In his comment, MUBAS acting registrar, Elias Chizimba, confirmed the development and said the school had an agreement with the students to pay their school fees by October 31.
He further said the students are owing the school about K300 million.
Dr. Chizimba said: “Ordinarily the regulation is contained in the student handbook that if one doesn’t pay school fees it means he or she is not a student in that particular year and all of them are aware of that and it has been happening in the past.”
“When we communicated that the dateline for the payment of school fees was October 31, most of them agreed and nobody bothered to consult us to explain their predicaments and it’s difficult for the management to know the challenges of all the 336 student that we are talking about.”
He further said out of 5700 students at the college, 336 are the ones affected.
He however said the management has never received any formal complaint from the students on the matter.
There have been reports that there are many students at MUBAS who are failing to meet the cost of living due to poverty and most of them depend on piece works for their survival.
Apart from school fees the students are also struggling to pay for accommodation and food.
