The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) says the country is losing billions of money to corruption which is rampant in government institutions more especially in Public Procurement.
The remarks were made in Mzuzu during a press briefing organised by the bureau ahead of the anti-corruption day commemoration which falls on December 9.
ACB Director General, Martha Chizuma, said the country should forget about achieving its 2063 aspirations if corrupt practices are not dealt with.
Chizuma said: “The general status of corruption in Malawi is still very worrisome because cases are just too many and when you look at the amounts of money being lost then I keep telling myself that lets forget about the dreams that we have upon Malawi regarding to prosperous 2063.”
She pointed out that 2063 vision requires public funds to be invested in social services like schools, roads farming urbanisation et cetera.
He therefore warned that “if we continue with corrupt practices at this rate, then let’s just forget about 2063”.
Chizuma mentioned the Public Procurement as “the most worrying red flag in as far as far as public procurement is concerned”.
She cited that quality of services and goods procured are usually of very poor and worse still they are nowhere to be seen despite being paid for.
