Ministry asked to disclose information officers

The Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has expressed worry over the delay by the Ministry of Information to release a list of information officers.

MHRC Director for Civil and Political Rights, Peter Chisi, disclosed this in Lilongwe during a two-day training for journalists on Access to Information (ITI) Act which was organised by the International Center for Asset Recovery (ICAR).

According to Chisi, despite the law been operationalised last year, the ministry of information is yet to make public details of information officers who were submitted to the ministry.

Chisi said: “The law became operational on 30th September 2020, and now 12 months have passed, and in between institutions have been submitting details of information officers to the ministry of information.

“And upon receipt of that information, the ministry is supposed to publish that information and also share it with the MHRC but unfortunately it has been delayed.”

Chisi however added that the Commission has written the Ministry on the same.

“We have done several follow-ups with the ministry since August this year, we have also written them officially to get this information and it is our hope that shortly we will have the list,” he said.

Ministry of information has asked for more time before commenting on the matter.
