Lilongwe City has got a new Mayor following the election held on Wednesday.
Malawi Congress Party Counsellor Richard Banda of Kaliyeka Ward has emerged winner after beating Juliana Kaduya who was the City’s Mayor.
Meanwhile, Councilor Banda has told Yoneco FM that he will work collaboratively with fellow Councilor and lawmaker towards achieving the City’s development aspirations.
“People within Lilongwe City Council (LCC) will see great fulfilment of development that were missing during the previous leadership but reaching this juncture people will see a lot of changes in this city,” he said.
“Likewise garbage was another challenge within our city so, this time as a Mayor my role so that people within the City should be happy.”
One her part, the outgoing Mayor Juliana Kaduya conceded defeat and expressed optimism that he will continue where she stopped.
“You when we are having an elections two things you take a day or else so my reaction is that I have accepted that I have lost these elections and you know someone to take a position it comes from God so you just thank God for everything,” she said.
“You know LCC the biggest challenge is waste management so I would like the newly elected mayors that they should keep on how to handle waste management and even the roads which are under construction, they should make sure they have good drainage system.”
All the votes counted were 30 and Banda amassed 13 while his deputy Esther Sagawa got 17 out the counted 30 votes.
