University of Malawi (UNIMA) law professor Edge Kanyongolo has endorsed the appointment of the new chief justice describing it as timely.
President Lazarus Chakwera on Friday announced the appointment of Justice Rezine Robert Mzikamanda as the country’s new chief justice following the retirement of former chief justice Andrew Nyirenda in December 2021 after attaining the age of 65.
Kanyongolo said the appointment indicates that when they are gaps in public sector they should be filled as quickly as possible.
“This applies to the cabinet for example where you should not have gaps and vacant positions unnecessary,” he said.
Kanyongolo therefore called on the new chief justice to ensure that the judiciary continues to uphold the rule of law and maintain the trust that Malawians have in the system.
