Chikwawa District Council says it is making everything possible to make sure that education sector is not affected in the district due to floods.
This comes following the recent floods that destroyed properties of people and left many households homeless.
Speaking with YFM online, Relief and Rehabilitation Officer for Chikwawa district council, Humphreys Magalasi says, as a council they are mobilizing resources such as tents to ensure that people who are camped in schools should be moved to emergency temporary areas.
“We are making our efforts to ensure that these affected people who are being currently hosted at schools, they are provided with tents so that we shift them from classroom blocks to the tents to give space to the learners,” Magalasi said.
He said the council will ensure provision of services like safe water, toilets, and bathrooms to make sure that people are protected from waterborne- diseases like cholera.
“Our friends from health sector are currently providing resources, and as a council we are also constructing toilets and bathrooms to make sure that people are provided with good sanitary services including water to prevent cholera outbreak.”
A total number of 3,333 households have been affected by these floods and many of them are from the areas of Traditional authorities Maseya, Lundu and Ngabu in the district.
